RISO RAVERISO RAVE uses risograph printing to create animations, taking inspiration from Kelli Anderson and Julia Schimautz. It is a celebration of UK music venues and dance culture, blending bold visuals with a call to protect these disappearing spaces. The animations pulse with the energy of a night out, while the printed textures of riso give them a raw, tactile feel.
The process started with simple pictograms, a spinning vinyl record and disco ball, laid out frame by frame on A3 sheets. First tried at 10 fps, then pushed to 12 for smoother movement, the animations grew to incorporate sourced club footage. Each animation is just two colours allowing for quick production, with the halftone pattern adding depth. The medium's limitations shaped the work—spacing frames to avoid printer jams, embracing misregistration, and keeping the palette tight to stay quick and playful. A riso-printed zine wraps everything together, showing off the frame sheets as artworks in their own right. The cover and inserts are printed on the riso, so you get the grit and glow of the colours in your hands. Inside, there’s a short write-up on why these venues matter, plus a QR code linking to a microsite where the animations loop endlessly. This can be viewed here.
